Barzona cattle are a composite breed of Afrikaner, Hereford, and Santa Gertrudes beef cattle. The breed was developed in the high desert, inter-mountain region of Arizona in the 1920s and 1930s. These hardy, red haired cattle are adaptable to extreme temperatures, sparse rainfall, rigorous range conditions, and calve naturally, without human help.
We provide real meat from conception to your plate.
Our Barzona cattle are bred and raised in Indio and Trabuco Canyon, southern California. We have owned this closed herd of Barzona cattle for over 35 years. Our closed herd means that we do not purchase outside cattle and you know exactly where your meat comes from. It has been over 22 years since any injections or worming chemicals have been used, either on the cows or their offspring. We do not dehorn or castrate our herd, nor use any man-made chemicals including hormones, vaccines and antibiotics. Our cattle have been raised 100 miles from the metropolitan Los Angeles area. We now have over 600 head of cattle.
The yearlings are brought to the Trabuco Ranch and run for two years. They are raised on natural grasses and browse. During the summer months when grass is scarce, their diet is supplemented with organic produce and forage (summer hay). No hard grain is fed ever!
Holistic Planned Grazing
We practice Holistic Planned Grazing to replenish and restore the ranch land and assist in decreasing the carbon footprint on the planet…one cow at a time. Our Barzona herd grazes on pastures 365 days a year and are naturally very active. As a result, our hardy cattle are leaner than grain fed animals confined to a feedlot—and a whole lot healthier!
We harvest our animals at 30 to 36 months old, rather than the typical short-lived, 12-14 month olds common in commercial agriculture. It takes 2 more years of grass feeding to fatten up our grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle.
Beef That is Healthy and Flavorful
Choice and Prime meats, (35-65% fat content), are raised or finished on grain and derive their flavor from the unhealthy fat content. 5 Bar Beef on the other hand is 15-25% fat and the flavor is from the meat itself. The result is delicious and healthy beef that is higher in healthy omega-3 fats and low in inflammatory omega-6 fats. Our meat’s healthy nutritional fat content has been verified in a national study through Mother Earth News.
